In the early 1800s, a man appeared on the scene who was destined to play a very important part in the religious history of Wayne County. These were Zulus, you see, and their traditional dancing was punctuated by mighty foot stompings that, when done in unison, quite literally made the earth tremble. They become Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds, inventors of a music that will later become known as isicathamiya, arising from the warning cry, “ Cothoza, bafana“-tread carefully, boys. In the mid-Thirties they shake off the dust and cow shit and take the train to Johannesburg, city of gold, where they move into the slums and become kitchen boys and factory hands. Among the half-naked herd boys who drift through the mission is a rangy kid called Solomon Linda, born 1909, who gets into the Orpheus-inspired syncopation thing and works bits of it into the Zulu songs he and his friends sing at weddings and feasts. Next thing, McAdoo and his troupe are on the road in Africa, playing to slack-jawed crowds in dusty mining towns. They meet during McAdoo’s triumphant tour of Australia in the 1880s, and when Sir Henry becomes High Commissioner of the Cape Colony a few years later, it occurs to him that Orpheus might find it interesting to visit. Orpheus McAdoo is leader of the celebrated Virginia Jubilee Singers, a combo that specializes in syncopated spirituals. Sir Henry Loch is a rising star of the Colonial Office. Since macOS doesn’t come with this option built-in, you will need a third-party solution. Is there any way to bridge this gap without data loss? The answer is positive. However, these two methods are not reliable and may cause data loss disasters. To solve this incompatibility issue, you can format your external drives for both Mac and Windows or enable Apple’s experimental write support natively. That is to say, you can only open and view files on NTFS drives, but can’t make any change on it. The problem is that macOS only provides read support for NTFS drive but has not supported writing to these drives. Microsoft prefers its proprietary NTFS and FAT on Windows, while Apple deploys its APFS and HFS+ on macOS. If you are a Windows user who has recently made the switch to Apple’s macOS, you may know by now that macOS runs on a different file system than Windows. The cross-platform incompatibility is always a huge roadblock especially when it comes to transferring files from Windows to Mac using an NTFS-formatted external drive. You must be wondering how is Louie Voice Control different from Voice Assistants – Alexa, Google Assistant & Siri. How is Louie Voice Control different from other voice-assisted devices? The new feature is implemented by the Voice Search application which is available for download on the Android. Louie will continue to build voice control for popular Apps across various aspects of a visually impaired’s life such as social media, food ordering, eCommerce, web search and browsing, emails and specific pain-points of a visually impaired. Voice Actions allows users to control their mobile devices using spoken commands. Louie currently supports Uber, YouTube, WhatsApp, Contacts, Phone Calls and Text Messages. The same experience has been carried through in Louie Voice Control (refer video). The motivation for building Louie came through a chance encounter with a sighted friend who was helping Pramit book an Uber. The founder Pramit, being visually impaired, has built Louie to essentially solve his own problems. Just like a friend would, Louie does a continuous two-way interaction with the users while enabling the user to do each and everything within an App with just voice commands. I was also pleased with the music functionality since it let me choose which app I wanted to listen with. However, I was able to get somewhere with "map of San Francisco" and "directions to Nopa" (yes, I like restaurants). ![]() I tried those two several times without success. Now, I understand the second one isn't precisely English as it's a Mexican restaurant, but considering Google's own example of Pizzeria Venti, I was still a bit surprised. There were actually a fair amount of commands that it just couldn't get, such as "send e-mail to Antuan Goodwin, hello how are you" and "directions to Papalote" (see above for the outcome of that one). I put Voice Actions to the test on a Motorola Droid running Froyo and found that the app can be quite useful-about half the time. Some commands work (right) better than others (left). Simply stating a word automatically launches a Web search, or you can use specific statements to send e-mails and text messages, listen to music, pull up maps, get directions, or make a note to yourself. The free app, which requires Android 2.2 (Froyo) and higher, is pretty simple: it let's you speak several handy commands that access various features on your phone. In a wise move to keep Android devices ahead of the curve in terms of features, Google has released Voice Actions. ![]() Comanche children the age of modern day-school- ers played games on horseback to learn skills that would serve them in future battles and raids. Richard Dodge, one of the first American military commanders to observe their skill, called them the “finest light cavalry in the world.” While the Apache, Kiowa, Sioux, Cheyenne, Blackfoot, Crow and others certainly prospered utilizing horses, none approached the expertise of the Comanches, who, within a few generations, so mastered horsemanship that Col. Unlike most other Indians, they selectively bred their own horses and even gelded them for battle, and they disdained the Apache practice of eating horseflesh. The Comanches’ astonishing horse- back rise to dominance of much of the Great Plains of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas was based on their unparalleled proficiency in all things equine. They had been kicked around and pushed hither and yon by other nations. Their society was flat and simple with neither religious nor military chiefs beyond the leaders of small hunting bands. Before that fateful meeting, Comanches, a branch of Shoshones from what is now Wyoming, had been considered a backward people by other Plains Indians. These questions can only be answered by first understanding the revolutionary encounter of the nomadic, buffalo-hunting Comanches with the horse. What was the Comanche Trail? What was it used for? How was it forged? According to Big Bend National Park archeologist Tom Alex, the remains of the trail’s networks in the park are readily apparent only from an aerial perspective these days, but it is still quite visible on the ground near Fort Stockton. Obscured by time and nature, the Comanche Trail that once cut through West Texas is now more a legend than a fact, but its traces can be found on old maps, in history books and novels and, in a few places, still engraved into the desert soil. Considering the high amount of both korean and japanese students I have, it made me uncomfortable. One particular video, a woman is speaking korean and he calls her japanese. It's silly, but kind of rubs me the wrong way. Italian guy talking about spaghetti and the like. If you care about this sort of thing, they really sort of lean into stereotypes in some of the videos, too. That's because they go kind of wacky with the settings and stuff. They speak incredibly fast, and I've seen a lot of my low level english speakers really struggling to find out whats going on. I think when producing the videos they sort of left my kids out in the dark. My class is 99% english language learners. They're quirky and they make my kids laugh, but the real value in quaver, I find, is the lessons themselves. The quaver videos themselves aren't the best. Sure, it's great to call on prior knowledge, but I can see students lose interest when it's a song they've done before. My biggest gripe with the songs is that they re-use a lot of them for different topics and different grade levels. ![]() Some are just sort of.there, and I found myself looking for the connections to the lesson from time to time. Like, the songs are just sort of put on screen with the words sing-a-long style. ![]() While there are a lot of songs that the company has made, they don't really support audiation. I'll talk more about this stuff in the cons section, too. The kids are engaged when we use it, so I guess I'm using technology in my classroom "more" than I normally would. Sure, I could make many of the games and stuff with the regular SMARTBOARD tech, but this stuff is pretty polished for what it is.
